Are Some People Susceptible to Frequent Bruising?

Does it feel like bruises pop up on your body and you don’t even remember doing anything to cause them? If so, you’re not alone. Some people are more susceptible to bruising for a variety of reasons.

Read on to learn more from our AFC Urgent Care Boulder team.

What Is a Bruise?

A bruise occurs when blood vessels underneath the skin pop as a result of force or trauma. When they pop, blood pools underneath the skin and then causes discoloration, usually brown, blue, yellow, black, green or red in color.

Bruises are highly treatable and hardly ever require medical attention to get better. If you get a painful bruise, we’ve listed how to properly care for it below.

How to Treat Bruises

  • Cold compress. If bruising has caused pain and swelling, applying a cold compress is step one. Remember to put a barrier, such as a towel or cloth, between the cold object and skin. Place the compress on your child’s skin for up to 20 minutes at a time.
  • Elevation. If an arm or leg is involved, elevate the limb and apply a cold compress for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, or until the swelling is reduced.
  • Over-the-counter medication, such as acetaminophen.

Why Do I Bruise Easily?

The most common cause is minor accidents, although certain medications, such as ibuprofen and blood thinners, can make you more prone to bruises. Another reason is age, as older adults’ thinning skin has less fat beneath it to cushion the blood vessels, making them more prone to bruising.

You shouldn’t be overly concerned if you bruise frequently. However, if your bruise produces the signs and symptoms indicated below, it’s a good idea to have it looked out at our AFC center.
