Can Stress Have An Impact On My Health?

It certainly can. When you feel chronically stressed, your mental and physical health will start to feel its effects.

Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Boulder team further explains below!

What Effects Will Stress Have on Me?

Chronic stress, in addition to what we’ve listed below, can cause blood pressure problems and can contribute to lots of other physical issues, such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

Not only does chronic stress affect your physical health, but it can potentially have an even greater impact on your mental health. Because stress triggers your body’s “fight or flight” response, this causes the body to shift its energy resources toward fighting off a life threat or fleeing from an enemy. This then causes the adrenal glands to release hormones called adrenalin (epinephrine) and cortisol, which can affect both your mental and physical health.

More Physical Effects of Stress

  • Low energy
  • Headaches and body aches
  • Frequent sickness
  • Upset stomach and digestive issues
  • Cognitive, behavioral and emotional problems

How Can I Reduce the Effects of Stress in My Life?

If you struggle with managing stress in your life, you’re not alone! Studies show that 78% of Americans feel stressed at least one day in a typical week.

Taking some time to intentionally rest can be a wonderful way to care for yourself and keep stress levels down. Try one or more of the relaxation methods that we’ve listed below.

Relaxation Methods That Reduce Stress

  • Try meditation or yoga. Breathing is a wonderful way to activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to more feelings of relaxation.
  • Spend meaningful time with friends and loved ones.
  • Read more and spend less time on phones or watching television. Reading can be a healthy entertainment alternative.
  • Spend time outdoors. Time in nature has been linked to increased feelings of contentment.
