Does My Child Have Pneumonia?
If you are a parent or a caregiver, you know that keeping the little ones in your home healthy sometimes feels like a full-time job! Children have the ability to get sick at any time, and it always seems to happen at the most inconvenient times.
Minor colds and other simple infections are usually more minor annoyances than anything, but infections like pneumonia need to be taken seriously.
Since pneumonia can become a dangerous infection for your child, our AFC Urgent Care Boulder team explains what warning signs to look for below.
What Are the Signs of Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection. When the infection makes its way into your lungs, it settles into the alveoli. Alveoli are the little air sacs in your lungs that help your body by transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide through your blood. If infected, these sacs fill up with fluid and can’t function normally.
If your children are little, they might have a harder time explaining how they are feeling. This is where your parental instincts need to come in! A fever, deep cough, fast breathing and chills are all common symptoms of pneumonia in children. If you notice any of these signs, come see us so we can investigate further.
Risk Factors for Severe Pneumonia
- Chronic illness like heart or lung disorders
- Asthma
- Premature infants
- A compromised immune system
Should I Bring My Child in to Be Seen?
We will always recommend you come see us if you are concerned about your child’s well-being! Nothing is more important than your children. Our team can perform a full evaluation and get a proper health history. We can listen to his or her lungs, and if your child is over the age of 6 months, we can also do a chest X-ray to get a clear picture of what is going on.
If we are able to get an X-ray image, we can see exactly where the infection has settled. Once we determine if it is pneumonia, we can offer treatment options to help your little one feel better soon. You can expect your child to make a full recovery in a few weeks, but be sure to keep an eye out for the warning signs of a worsening infection.
