How Many Colds Is Normal Per Year?
Contracting a cold can be so frustrating to deal with! It seems like they always show up at the most inconvenient times. Knowing that they are the most common reason for illness in the fall and winter seasons, it’s no wonder that there are millions of cases every year!
It is considered normal for an average adult to expect two to three mild colds a year. For infants and young children, that number may be higher. Our AFC Urgent Care Boulder team breaks down all things related to the common cold below, so read on!
Where Do Colds Come From?
A viral infection in your nose or throat is what causes a cold. Since there are so many different types of coronaviruses, your infection can come from a variety of places! In fact, there are over 200 strains of the common cold.
Thankfully, most cases are mild and resolve on their own within seven to 10 days. While your symptoms may be mild, you are still contagious to others! Avoid contact with family and friends and wash your hands frequently to help prevent the spread.
Common Cold Symptoms
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Mild headache/body aches
Can a Cold Become Serious?
Most common colds don’t get to the point of requiring professional medical attention. Rest and fluids are the best course of action! However, if you have a persistent fever or your symptoms don’t resolve after 10 days, it is best to get evaluated by a medical provider to investigate further.
If you have a sick infant under 12 weeks of age, it is recommended to seek medical attention if they have a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher. Infections in small bodies can progress quickly, so it is always a good idea to err on the side of caution and go in.
