What Does the Stomach Flu Feel Like?
We are sorry you are even asking this question! Feeling sick is never fun, but stomach bugs are a completely different type of misery. One minute you are out enjoying yourself and the next you are doubled over in pain or are desperately searching for the nearest restroom.
Viral gastroenteritis, commonly called the stomach flu, is a highly contagious viral infection that can come on quickly.
Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Boulder team explains more about the stomach flu and how to care for yourself.
What Is the Stomach Flu?
Even though it is referred to as a flu, it is actually not related to influenza. It is an intestinal infection that is caused by contaminated food or water—more aptly called a stomach bug. You can also contract it by interacting with an infected person. You can start experiencing symptoms as early as 12 hours after the exposure, but it is more common for symptoms to appear one or two days after encountering the virus.
If someone in your home has the stomach flu, do your best to keep him or her quarantined for the time being and do a thorough cleaning of your home. This type of infection is really easily spread, so protect your other family members by disinfecting all high-touch areas and wash any bedding or clothes.
Symptoms of the Stomach Flu
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach cramps and pain
- Muscle aches or headache
- Low-grade fever
How Long Does the Stomach Flu Last?
Those symptoms are pretty undesirable, right? Even though you are probably not feeling your best right now, there is hope on the horizon! Most people fully recover from the stomach flu one to three days after the onset of symptoms. In the meantime, sip slowly on water to avoid dehydration, get a lot of rest and eat when your stomach allows it. Stick to the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast).
If you are over the age of 65 or if it is your infant that is experiencing these symptoms, the infection may linger longer than three days and become more severe. Keep an eye on how you feel and always know that you can come see us if you are concerned.
